Four Hot Web 2.0 Apps

Basecamp

There are hundreds of collaborative project management solutions out there, especially in this Web 2.0 bubble we seem to be in. Basecamp has key differentiators: more than a million users, a simple yet lucrative price structure, and business-ready “people and permissions” across multiple projects. Additionally, premium versions integrate with sister services such as Campfire, a browser-based collaborative chat client.

Included Writeboards are an easy way to keep cut-and-paste “scrapbooks” for collaborative documentation. The site provides email reminders as well as custom RSS feeds (based on permissions). All project milestones are downloadable to your iCal compliant calendar, so get ready to be punished by tasks in almost any calendar tool and on any device you wish. Goodbye Microsoft SharePoint!

Remember The Milk

Three words: RTM for GMail. If you have my problem – always checking GMail and never getting anything done – RTM is the Get-Things-Done system for you. It snugly fits into the right-hand side of your GMail inbox, conveniently covering up all those annoying ads, shining a ToDo list torch in your eyes every time you procrastinate in front of your web browser (but only Firefox 2.0 and up are supported).

The website interface further allows you to map ToDo items to locations, records postponements, etc. Should you be feeling extra geeky, you can share tasks with friends, because that’s exactly what friends do. Conveniently, the service provides an iCal feed, so you can set those undone list items to haunt you in a variety of clients. For $25 per year, MilkSync will push calendar items to your iPhone or Windows Mobile device.

Wufoo

Don’t know how to program, but need to create an online petition? Or perhaps make a custom RSVP form for event invitations? Creating simple online forms has never been easier. Using Wufoo, a beginner can whip up incredibly attractive AJAX-style forms in a whiz. Choose from a plethora of templates and color schemes, or design your own through a point-and-click browser interface. Even better, Wufoo will organize all the collected data into a convenient web database, which you can manipulate, visualize and filter to your heart’s content.

All collected data is available in a format that you can handily dump into Excel.

PhotoShelter

Commercial photo-sharing built by Bruce Wayne photographers who double up as Web 2.0 Batmen. All photographers who take or scan high-res photographs at print-ready resolutions and are looking for an online channel for distribution of their work should look no further. Art buyers and photo editors browsing this website can use the site’s inbuilt rights management system to license their work appropriately for their particular application. The site’s quality is further assured by smart tag based search, the screening and business model: only high-res photos (the minimum is 11MB, RAW format required) are uploadable, and should your work be licensed through the site, it will take a cut of the proceeds.

This is professional photo sharing integrated with a high-level understanding of intellectual property rights. Truly, the Internet is now open for the independent photographer’s business.
